Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on the Mayor's proposals to take on wider powers, and speaking ahead of tomorrow's Plenary session at City Hall to debate the issue said:
"Support for devolution of power goes to the very core of the Liberal Democrats. Without question Londoners should have far more control over how their city is run through politicians they have directly elected. It is only right that Whitehall gives up interfering in and controlling so many areas affecting the capital.
"However any increase in powers to the Mayor must go hand in hand with increased accountability and that will only come about through granting the London Assembly extra powers.
"The London Assembly should be granted the power to scrutinise, obtain information and require witnesses to attend from organisations and authorities outside the GLA family but which play a significant part in the lives of Londoners as well as gaining the right to appoint members to the Functional Bodies and new Agencies created.
"Strengthening the powers of the London Assembly strengthens the role of the Mayor and ensures democratic accountability is at the heart of London's government."
